From 10 to 12 October 2007 the Sixth Ministerial Conference ‘Environment for Europe’ took place in Belgrade, Serbia. Under the auspices of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the Countdown 2010 Alliance, a side event on Regions and municipalities as champions for biodiversity 2010 was organized by ECNC, the Countdown 2010 Secretariat, the Dutch and Croatian governments, the Dutch Province of Noord-Brabant and UNEP-Regional Office for Europe. UNEP and the Province of Noord-Brabant provided financial support to the organization and the reporting of the side event, which took place on 11 October 2007.

The target of the side event was to highlight the important role of regions and municipalities in implementing the European biodiversity 2010 target, to further the actions of these stakeholders in the framework of the Countdown 2010 initiative and to present the results of the international conference Regions as Champions for Biodiversity 2010.

This report summarizes the presentations and contains an outline of the forum discussion held during the side event.
