Mobilising a network of Local and Regional Authorities around the 2010 biodiversity targets
ECNC, the Countdown 2010 Secretariat, and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability worked together in order to further communicate the European 2010 biodiversity target and to involve more European local and regional authorities in the Countdown initiative.
The overall objective of the project was to establish a network of local and regional authorities in Europe working to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010. The importance of biodiversity conservation and management and preparing the ground for concrete actions to support local governments in playing a major role in halting the loss of biodiversity were the main policy messages of this project.
ECNC’s role in the project included communicating the Countdown 2010 initiative; providing expert advice on biodiversity to local and regional authorities; and advising the authorities in Zagreb (Croatia) and Budapest (Hungary) on how to achieve the targets at local level. As part of this project, ECNC organized a side event on the role of regions and local authorities in Europe during the 6th Ministerial Conference 'Environment for Europe' (October 2007, Belgrade).
The project ran from November 2006 to March 2008.
