Shaping the European Ecological Network

The European Ecological Network is the backbone of Europe's blue and green nature. It provides stability and resilience to Europe’s biodiversity and accommodates for ecological impacts of climate change. ECNC has a political mandate to coordinate the establishment of the Pan-European Ecological Network, and runs the joint secretariat of its Expert Committee together with the Council of Europe.

This ECNC programme supports the establishment of the European Ecological Network through the development of national and regional networks in Europe. The development of the network is based on common objectives adopted by European states, and builds on the implementation of nature conservation instruments in Europe, in particular EU’s Natura 2000 and the Emerald Network under the Bern Convention. ECNC also promotes the involvement of other socio-economic sectors and the physical planning sector.

Through being involved in the process of designing and promoting the network, ECNC has gained over 15 years of experience in connecting people, in connecting nature, and in connecting practice with policy.
