Nature Outlook deriving key messages for policymakers and stakeholders
On 17 and 18 June 2015, the last stakeholder dialogue session in support of the European Nature Outlook process was held in Brussels. PBL (Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency) has been developing the Nature Outlook, which explores perspectives on the future of nature in the EU. To ensure that the Nature Outlook will reflect the variety of ideas and perspectives on nature throughout Europe and various sectors, we actively involved a variety of stakeholders. They were asked to consider questions such as: What is your vision on the future of nature? What do you think are the most important messages that policymakers, businesses and society should take into consideration? To answer these and other questions, together with PBL, ECNC has organized a total of three stakeholder dialogue sessions. In these sessions, over 60 stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds were given ample opportunity to exchange views and perspectives.
Building on the results of the first two dialogues (Generating perspectives, 2 & 3 December 2014; Elaborating perspectives, 17 & 18 March 2015), this last dialogue aimed at deriving key messages for European and other policymakers, and stakeholders. The dialogue allowed the participants’ insights to be included in the messages for policymakers and stakeholders, and gave them the opportunity to network through the use of the ‘open space’ methodology. The dialogue also encouraged the participants to act as ambassadors of the Nature Outlook process.
The results of the three dialogues will be used as input for the Nature Outlook to define inspiring perspectives, to work these out in a realistic way, and derive relevant messages from them. The results will then be presented at various events, including a dedicated conference organized by PBL to be held in early 2016, and a high-level conference of the Member States in April 2016, and to DG Environment, the European Parliament and other institutes and networks.
