Launch of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative
There is a growing body of evidence that marine litter, in particular derelict fishing gear, poses serious environmental, conservation, animal welfare and human health problems and entails considerable economic costs, all of which are of relevance to many stakeholders. It is a global problem that requires urgent action and global cooperation.
GGGI is a cross-sectoral alliance committed to driving solutions to the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear worldwide. The initiative brings together a diverse range of experts from around the world to work together for safer, cleaner oceans. The GGGI will work globally and locally to build evidence, define best practices and inform policies, and catalyse and replicate solutions.
