CEEweb Annual Academy focuses on water and nature directives
For its annual academy on 7 October 2015, CEEweb for Biodiversity organized a Thematic Networking Event as part of the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process: How can we make the Water Framework Directive and the Birds and Habitats Directives work together? ECNC supported the organization of the event and co-facilitated the Water workshop.
The event, held in Budapest, Hungary, focused on the possibilities to improve the cooperation of water and nature professionals and to benefit from the synergies between the three directives for better coherence of the Natura 2000 network and smoother collaborative implementation of water and nature policies. An ECNC representative gave a presentation on the state of affairs in the New Biogeographical Process and a short overview of the kick-off seminar for the Continental, Pannonian, Steppic and Black Sea Biogeopgraphical region.
The participants explored the opportunities and barriers for this to be achieved and came up with suggestions on how to benefit from opportunities and how to resolve problems. The key topics were then further elaborated in the form of a short action plan:
- How to get the water authorities and nature authorities to speak a common language.
- How to ensure implementation and proper land use.
- How to talk to stakeholders.
- How to solve technical difficulties such as reporting requirements.
The full report of the event will soon be published on the Natura 2000 Communication Platform.
