UN Biodiversity Conference: commitments for action on biodiversity
At the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cancun, Mexico, agreements were reached on actions to integrate biodiversity into the forestry, fisheries, agriculture, and tourism sectors and to achieve the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. In addition, agreements were reached on actions related to specific themes including protected areas, ecosystem restoration, marine biodiversity, biodiversity and health, synthetic biology, and traditional knowledge, among others, and on capacity development and the mobilization of financial resources.
The Conference took place from 2 to 17 December 2016 and was attended by over 7,000 participants, including some 4,000 delegates from 170 countries and over 400 organizations.
