Invasive Alien Species: the urban dimension
On 5 September, the IUCN organized a conference to discuss the challenges related to invasive alien species (IAS) in Europe’s urban areas. The event took place at IUCN Headquarters in Switzerland.
ECNC’s Deputy Director Neil McIntosh spoke about the need to involve stakeholders to combat IAS in cities. Local and regional authorities can play a key role in helping address the risks associated with biological invasions and can contribute to raising awareness among decision-makers and citizens.
The conference brought together European, national and local governmental representatives as well as experts and NGOs to exchange knowledge and best practices on solutions to reduce the impacts of invasive species in urban areas.
Next week, the European Commission is expected to publish it plans to tackle invasive species. It is expected to announce pan-EU legislative measures as part of the EU’s biodiversity strategy.
